Sentence หมายถึง กลุ่มคำที่ประกอบด้วยภาคประธาน และภาคขยายประธาน ที่เรียงประกอบเข้าด้วยกันอย่างเป็นระเบียบ โดยแสดงข้อความที่มีความหมายอย่างใดอย่างหนึ่ง
Sentence (ประโยค) ในภาษาอังกฤษ แบ่งออกเป็น 4 ประเภท คือ
1. Simple Sentence (ประโยคความเดียวหรือเอกัตถประโยค) แบ่งออกเป็น6คือ
1.1 ประโยคบอกเล่า (Affirmative Sentence)
1.2 ประโยคปฏิเสธ (Negative Sentence )
1.3 ประโยคคำถาม (Interrogative Sentence)
1.4 ประโยคคำถามเชิงปฏิเสธ (Negative Question Sentence)
1.5 ประโยคคำสั่งหรือข้อร้อง ( Imperative Sentence)
1.6 ประโยคอุทาน (Exclamation Sentence)
2. Compound Sentence (ประโยคความรวม หรืออเนกัตถประโยค)
3. Complex Sentence (ประโยคความซ้อน หรือสังกรประโยค)
4. Compound – Complex Sentence (ประโยคความผสม หรือ อเนกัตถสังกรประโยค)
ในวันนี้เรามาเรียนเรื่องประโยคคำสั่งที่สุภาพกันนะคะ
1. กรุณาบอกชื่อของคุณให้ฉันด้วย Please tell me your name.
2. กรุณาปิดประตู : Please close the door.
3. กรุณาเปิดไฟ : Please turn on the light.
4. กรุณาปิดไฟ : Please turn off the light.
5. กรุณาปิดโทรทัศน์ : Please turn off the television.
6. กรุณามองดูสิ่งนี้ : Please look at this.
7. กรูณาตามฉันมา: Please follow me.
8. กรูณาเงียบ: Please be quiet.
9. โปรดระมัดระวัง: Please be careful.
10. กรุณาทำความสะอาดห้องนี้: Please clean this room.
วิธีการใช้ Imperative มีดังต่อไปนี้
1. สั่ง (order) หรือออกคำสั่งให้ผู้อื่นทำอะไรให้เรา เช่น
Take that chewing gum out of your mouth.
Stand up straight.
Give me the details.
2. ให้คำแนะนำ (instruction) ผู้อื่น เช่น
Open your book.
Take two tablets every evening.
Take a left and then a right.
3. เชิญให้ผู้อื่นทำสิ่งใดสิ่งหนึ่งร่วมกับผู้พูด
Come in and sit down. Make yourself at home.
Please start without me. I'll be there shortly.
Have a piece of this cake. It's delicious.
4. ให้สัญญาณ แจ้ง หรือประกาศต่าง ๆ ให้ผู้อื่นทราบ เช่น
Push.
Do not use.
Insert one dollar.
5. ให้คำแนะนำอย่างเป็นกันเอง เช่น Speak to him. Tell him how you feel.
Have a quiet word with her about it.
Don't go. Stay at home and rest up. Get some sleep and recover.
6. ห้ามไม่ให้ผู้อื่นทำสิ่งต่าง ๆ เช่น
Don't sit here.
Don't call me again.
Don't buy this car.
หมายเหตุ ถ้าต้องการให้ประโยค Imperative สุภาพยิ่งขึ้น ควรเติม 'do' ไว้ข้างหน้า เช่น
Do be quiet.
Do come.
Do sit down.
วิธีการพูดหรือเขียนประโยค Imperative มีวิธีการที่ง่ายมาก ๆ ก็คือ ให้ขึ้นต้นประโยคด้วย Infinitive หรือกริยาช่องที่หนึ่งที่ไม่มีการเปลี่ยนรูป เช่น
Buy the pen for me.
Don’t talk on the class.
Go home now.
แต่ถ้าต้องการห้ามไม่ให้ทำอะไรก็ให้นำ "do not" หรือ "don't" มาวางไว้หน้า Infinitive เช่น
Don't swim here.
Don't use a mobile.
Don't copy a homework.

We can use the imperative to give instructions.

- Take a left and then a right.
We can use the imperative to make an invitation.
- Come in and sit down. Make yourself at home.
- Please start without me. I'll be there shortly.
- Have a piece of this cake. It's delicious.
We can use the imperative on signs and notices.
- Push.
- Do not use.
- Insert one dollar.
We can use the imperative to give friendly informal advice.
- Speak to him. Tell him how you feel.
- Have a quiet word with her about it.
- Don't go. Stay at home and rest up. Get some sleep and recover.
We can make the imperative 'more polite' by adding 'do'.
- Do be quiet.
- Do come.
